Ponderous Product Packaging

Please don't sell me something in a package designed to thwart a rhino attack.

Your product package should not be more durable than your product.

I bought the product because I want access to it. It's not going to be a museum display or put into a time capsule.

It should be a requirement that a CEO be required to open every type of consumer product package their company ships with their bare hands while being filmed for a subsequent YouTube upload. Hilarity ensues...

Joking aside, the reality is that the package is part of the product: our gateway to using it. When the packaging is poorly thought out, it's an awkward beginning to the relationship with a customer at best. At worst, it creates a mood where your product is being set-up to be judged harshly.

Don't let ponderous packaging ruin your product.

  1. Good point, Tim. Every part of the customer experience counts.

Interestingly, I read this tip about using a can opener for those nasty plastic clamshells http://www.wikihow.com/Open-Rigid-Plastic-Clamshell-Packages-Safely. It works great and keeps you safe from the sharp plastic edges.

I enjoy reading your blog. ~ Jeff

    1. I've tried the can opener trick too! It didn't work for me, but I'm glad it worked for you!

  3. I agree. I have actually hurt myself trying to get to a product sealed as such. There are some packaged so 'well' that it would take a Delta Force team a week to get to it, using every possible resource. I know that this packaging was designed as a theft deterrent, and it has made a name for itself in product safety (shipping ease), but I now take the packaging into consideration when I buy a product.

How much energy am I going to expend to get to the product? Will I actually ever touch it? Will there be blood? These are legitimate concerns.

Thank you for this! It was most excellent!
